Small Farms Homesteading Internship Program:

Offers hands-on training for future farmers, homesteaders, and gardeners to learn the skills necessary to grow fresh, nutritious produce using the sustainable methods practiced on organic farms.

Apprentices, interns, and volunteers have hands-on experiences working at our 1.6 acre demonstration field, greenhouse, and orchard.

Here are some of the techniques that volunteers, small-scale farm training participants, interns, and apprentices learn about and, of course, practice:

  • Drip-irrigation/irrigation schedule
  • Organic fertilizer application
  • Field planning/intensive food production
  • Seeds/planting schedule
  • Planting seeds in trays/thinning & singulation
  • Transplanting
  • Sustainable pest control
  • Working with pigs, chickens, goats, and turkeys
  • Harvesting/post-harvest handling/marketing
  • Tractor/tilling
  • Cover crops/over-wintering
  • Work ethic (ups and downs of the season)
  • Field-based education on 1.6 acre demonstration field and orchard
  • Organic vegetable, herb, and fruit production
  • Added-value products/preserving food
  • Greenhouse management
  • Weed identification/management
