Things are popping over at Converging Creeks Farm!  This warm spring has things off to an early start, but I'm still waiting to see what the rest of spring has in store for us.  We are currently looking for interns for this year's vegetable growing season so visit the 'get involved' page to see how you can get started on your path to personal food production.

Wow!  2014 went by in a blur!  Thanks to all who made it such a wonderfully successful year.  We made great strides in our strategic planning which will guide us in our journey over the next several years towards becoming food justice/access pioneers in Clackamas County.  It is so important that people have access to healthy food, yet it is sometimes so hard for them to find it.  Our goal is make it that much easier for people to know that the power of being healthy rests right in their own hands.  We need all the help we can get so consider making a donation today!

Another whirlwind year for us over at Food Waves! Converging Creeks Farm is exploding with the bounty of the summer!  The pigs are quickly approaching slaughter weight; the turkeys are traveling all over the farm; the new chickens are starting to lay their first eggs, and the goat kids are starting to look more like goats than kids!  Somehow it feels like fall is knocking on the door as the winter squash are starting to come in and the nights are getting cooler already.  Don't forget to order your thanksgiving turkey before it is too late!

Wow! Somehow the whole season slipped by without one peep from us on this blog.  A testament to how busy we were I can assure you!  2012 was a great year for Food|Waves.  We had two part-time apprentices, two interns and many wonderful volunteers who helped shape our success.  We built a great new wash station, put in underground irrigation, built the structure for our outdoor kitchen, and filled our expanded fields with so much wonderful food to put smiles on our faces!  Winter is setting in, the fields are resting, the goats have been bred, the turkeys and pigs are delighting our dinner tables!  Thanks to all for your hard work and enthusiasm.  We have our eye on 2013 now with apprentice applications coming in, the seed order getting planned, projects finding their way onto the priority list, and short days to rest and get ready.  Stay tuned for another great year!

The Spring weather has so far been kind to our planting schedule so we are well on our way to having another banner year in our growth as a non-profit educational farm.  We are starting at the PSU Saturday Farmers' Market on June 9th so come see us there in the northeast corner at stall 117CWe will have lettuce and greens to start with much more to follow!

The greenhouse is springing and popping to life as the daylight hours are increasing.  We have acquired a new mama goat and her two, 1 month old kids, and we have 30 new laying hen chicks who are getting visibly bigger by the hour it seems!  Now we just need some dry weather so we can get some seedlings out into the fields and the season will be in full spring swing!  Check us out on facebook for updated pictures and "Like" us to stay informed!

We are smack dab in the middle of some amazing infrastructure improvement projects.  We currently have the frames in place for two new buildings on the property; a wash station and an outdoor kitchen!  The wash station is ready for roofing, and the kitchen will be getting its roof next week.  2012 is going to be a great year for us...we can all feel it coming on strong!

What a gorgeous day!  The sun was shining, the birds chirping, and the frogs were croaking in the pond while we were preparing the fields in this mid-winter dry spell.  We gave the grass a buzz-cut over the areas where we will be expanding out fields today.  Next we will disc and sub-soil, and till and disc and till and till and till until the sod-grass becomes a plant-able field.  It was so warm that we opened the greenhouse doors, turned on the fans and the sprinklers and let the greenhouse get some fresh warm air!  We also weeded around the lettuce, mustard, kale and chard that are slowly growing in the ground in the greenhouse.  What a wonderful reminder of how it feels to be working the soil and growing food.  May the sun stay out and come back early this year so all of our spring crops can grow in abundance!

We received several applications from some wonderful people this year who were interested in learning more about how human nourishment can be produced on a local level.  The result is that three people have made a commitment to Food Waves and Converging Creeks Farm's mission to become more self-sufficient and to work towards a brighter future for our planet.  Internships and volunteer opportunities are still available, but the paid apprentice positions have been filled for this year.  Thanks to all who applied, and we are so looking forward to this year's crew and crops!  Stayed tuned for more developments!

Wow! Fall has nearly passed us by in a whirlwind of activity and dramatically cold weather.  We are ordering seeds, interviewing apprentices, and making plans for next year.  2012 promises to be yet another huge growth year for us so stay tuned for what is to come.  Thanks to all who supported us in 2011.  We can't wait to see what the future holds!

It has indeed been a very busy Summer harvesting, weeding, and trying to keep up with the myriad of projects that keep this venture moving.  We are planting fall crops and continually maintaining everything that is already in the ground.  Contact us if you are interested in helping out on the farm or tackling fund-raising for the many other projects we have in our sites!

Twin baby goats were born yesterday! They are Alpine, Toggenburg, Lamancha mix breed, and they are very happy, healthy and undeniably adorable! (see pics here) We also have new baby Turkeys that are cheep cheeping in their chick room.  As the weather has been getting better, we have been able to get over 10,000 plants in the ground with more to come so stay tuned for when we will start harvesting!

Food|Waves started our first school garden today at an elementary school in Tigard, OR.  The school has three raised beds, but they needed some help with how to manage the prospect of growing food in them.  We donated some soil amendments and some plants from our greenhouse back at Converging Creeks Farm, and their garden is now on its way to teaching young students where their food comes from.  This school also composts all their kitchen wastes which made up some of the amendments.  This year, they will have the opportunity to see the full food cycle as they grow the food, eat the food and then feed the soil with their kitchen waste so that they can continue to feed themselves in the future!

We had our first big outdoor planting of the year today!  The weather this spring has been abnormally wet - even for the northwest - and we have been babying our plants in the greenhouse for longer than is usual.  Today, however, several thousand of them graduated to their outdoor playground!  We transplanted Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Romanesco, Kale, Chard, Mustard, Lettuce, Peas, Cress, and Arugula.  They are feeling much better about things now in their more permanent home.

April 2, 2011

Today we planted 82 fruit trees in two different orchard spaces at Converging Creeks Farm.  We did 40 Asian Pears, 20 Apples, 10 Kiwis, 6 Cherries, 3 Plums, 2 Persimmons, and 1 Pomegranate.  Thanks to help from some dedicated volunteers who braved the shifting weather we had a great day of planting.  We may even have some fruit by next year, but keep an eye out over the next few years for this addition to our offerings.

March 18, 2011

We had our first harvest from the greenhouse today!  We are selling lettuce, arugula, mustard greens, wrinkled crinkled crumpled cress, and kale to Trebol Restaurant on N Albina St in Portland.  Go check it out!  Tell Chef Kenny that you appreciate his buying local and supporting Food|Waves!

Yesterday we attended the Oregon State University Small Farms Conference in Corvallis, Oregon where we participated in many workshops relevant to the issues and lifestyles of Oregon small farmers.  It was exciting to be in touch with our broader community of farmers as Food|Waves gears up for the season to come.  There were many varied topics and inspiring speakers such as Chuck Hassebrook from the Center for Rural Affairs who advocates for the reality that public policies can be changed, and that small farms do have a role to play in climate change.  His thoughts are great fodder for our motivation to get our programs up and running!

Many exciting things happening this month!  We have completed our second round of seedings at Converging Creeks Farm.  The goats have come back to the farm after getting bred and they are now pregnant due to deliver kids in May.  May will be baby animal month as we are also expecting day-old Turkey Pullets around the same time!  We tilled up two new fields this week before the snows came in, and the biggest news of all...we got accepted into the Saturday PSU Farmer's market on the Park Blocks in Portland!!!!  We have also been given two donations towards the planting of fruit trees and berry bushes!  In early March we will be planting 80 trees and many berry plants/bushes in the ground, and we are looking for volunteers who want to come out and help and learn how this all works!  Stayed tuned for more info.  Email This email address is being protected from spambots. The 2011 season is off to a roaring start as we prepare for our first season of fund-raising with the hopes of launching our exciting programs!  Applications for apprenticeship spots are forthcoming with acceptance being contingent on what funds we are able to procure.

We have already gotten seeds in the ground in the greenhouse at Converging Creeks Farm with an eye on getting some early harvests if we get a break in the weather in March that will allow us to get out into the field.  Check back soon to see our status and visit www.convergingcreeks.com for more info!
